Bennett AerospaceInc. has an *immediate* opening for a highly motivated Additive Manufacturing Mechanical Designer in support of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Material Manufacturing Technology Branch.  The position will be based at MOOG in Webster, MA. The successful candidate will specialize in the research and development of materials and advanced robotic path planning and automation to support the development of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies such as cold spray, metal powder bed fusion, and selective laser sintering.


Job Description:


This position consist of requirements that are twofold. These requirements include:


(a) Developing advanced Robotic Path Planning techniques (i.e. INROPA - Intelligent Robot Painting Software) toward application for AM Processes in support of DoD applications to make near-net shaped parts and/or component restoration and repair; and


(b) Developing novel additive manufacturing processes to replace conventional cast, wrought, welded and/or machining methods used to fabricate new parts and/or restore legacy components to include; mold design, fixturing, surface preparation, and inspection techniques.


This position will require a strong working knowledge of and hands-on experience in robotics, machining, casting, forging, coatings technologies (i.e. cold spray, laser sintering), pattern design, finishing, welding, heat treatment, assembly processes, and fixture and machine fabrication and materials and mechanical testing (microscopy, adhesion, tensile, testing).

Core duties and responsibilities include the following, but are not limited to:


  • Conduct research to develop optimal robotic path plans and advanced automation for cold spray additive manufacturing processes to enable reproducible results on complex part geometries in a production setting;
  • Conduct and transition research involving agile manufacturing innovations to enable insertion and integration of new material systems to enhance effectiveness, durability, reliability, affordability and sustainability, and life-cycle management of Army and DoD weapons systems;
  • Develop materials for processing technologies to optimize weight, performance, and durability, and where possible manufacturing and processing technologies that minimize cost and maximize functionality;
  • Develop, demonstrate, prototype, and evaluate new, improved, or novel lightweight materials to enable technologies that can be applied with unique processing strategies;
  • Research the relationship between materials processing, structure, and performance relationships in metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites using materials synthesis, processing, characterization, and performance measurements;
  • Draft proposals for improved additive manufacturing processes to address new parts design and/or legacy system component restoration; and
  • Prepare presentations and written documents summarizing efforts, which may be presented to staff, universities, private corporations, research institutes, national laboratories, or other Government research centers.


Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Arts or Science and ten years of experience OR a Masters and five years of experience OR a recent graduated Ph.D.
  • Experience as Scientist and/or Engineer
  • Knowledge and experience in advanced manufacturing technologies and equipment
  • Knowledge and training in programming and robotic control software
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems and their design and operation
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 principles and their application in a laboratory setting

Preferred Training and Experience:

  • Certificate in Robot Programming
  • Strong background in mechanical and advanced materials design
  • Expertise utilizing SolidWorks to produce product designs
  • Strong multidisciplinary scientific, physics, and engineering background

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel for training as well as customer support is as needed, but not to exceed 1 week per month.

Security Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance
  • Current clearance is required
