    About Us

    Bennett Aerospace, Incis located in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina.  Established in 2008, we are a women owned, veteran owned, certified 8(a) small business that provides scientific, engineering, and technical advisory services to our customers. Primarily focused on Federal Government clients in general, and the Department of Defense in particular, Bennett Aerospace provides expert guidance and advice on the full spectrum of R&D and its applications in engineering, science, medicine, and IT, as well as providing strategic programmatic support in order to meet customer goals and objectives.  Bennett Aerospace is a rapidly growing business focused on hiring and retaining the best people.

    Bennett AerospaceInc. has an opening for a highly motivated Synthetic Chemist in support of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Maryland.

    Job Description

    The successful scientist/engineer candidate will specialize in the in the synthesis and characterization of small molecules and polymers at interfaces.  Support requirements are fourfold:

    (a) synthesize polymer systems via various techniques including radical polymerization, ring opening metathesis (ROMP) and epoxy/amine thermoset reactions;

    (b) synthesize coupling agents used to form self-assembled monolayers or improve adhesion between inorganic surfaces and polymers to include silane coupling agents and phosphonates;

    (c) fabricate and perform mechanical testing of lap shear specimens to determine adhesive performance of various surface treatments and polymers;

    (d) characterize materials using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), contact angle goniometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

    Support tasks are complex and require the application of advanced physical, materials, and mathematical principals.

    • Conduct synthesis of various polymers including epoxy-based thermosets and ROMP-based polymers.
    • Conduct surface functionalization of aluminum surfaces with their native oxides to attach various polymers or self-assembled monolayers.
    • Conduct thermal characterization of polymeric materials using DSC, DMA and TGA.
    • Conduct surface analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to quantify atomic concentrations of surface modified carbon materials and polymers.
    • Conduct UPS measurements to measure the work function of various surfaces.
    • Fabricate lap shear specimens for testing and perform mechanical testing of lap shear specimens.
    • Analyze the fracture surfaces of lap shear specimens to determine types of failure (cohesive, adhesive, mixed mode, etc.)
    • Prepare presentations and written documents summarizing efforts in Government format for Form 1 approval (process of instruction provided by COR as GFI). Upon TO COR request,
    • Contractor personnel shall present the information to the ARL staff, universities, private corporations, research institutes, national laboratories, or other Government research centers.

    Education and Experience:

    • Doctoral degree with a concentration in organic chemistry or inorganic chemistry and 5 or more years of relevant experience.
    • At least three (3) years of practical experience to include working in a university laboratory as part of a doctoral program.
    • At least two (2) years of practical post-doctoral experience to include working in a government laboratory or industrial laboratory.
    • A co-author on at least ten (10) published peer-reviewed journal articles.
    • Experience with lap shear measurements and characterization of lap shear failure modes.
    • Experience with silicon synthesis, phosphonate synthesis, and NMR characterization of these products.
    • Experience with X-ray crystallography.
    • Experience with self-assembled monolayer deposition.
    • Experience with surface functionalization of inorganic surfaces like aluminum or silicon.
    • Experience with XPS and contact angle measurements.
