About Us:

Bennett Aerospace, Inc. is located in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina.  Established in 2008, we are a woman owned, veteran owned, certified 8(a) small business that provides scientific, engineering, and technical advisory services to our customers. Primarily focused on Federal Government clients in general, and the Department of Defense in particular, Bennett Aerospace provides expert guidance and advice on the full spectrum of R&D and its applications in engineering, science, medicine, and IT, as well as providing strategic programmatic support in order to meet customer goals and objectives.  Bennett Aerospace is a rapidly growing business focused on hiring and retaining the best people.

Bennett AerospaceInc. has an opening for a highly motivated Polymer Scientist in support of the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Maryland.

Job Description:

The successful scientist/engineer candidate will specialize in the synthesis, characterization and modeling of polymer systems.  Support requirements are fivefold:

(a) synthesize polymer systems via various techniques including atom transfer radical polymerization, radical polymerization, and epoxy/amine thermoset reactions;

(b) characterize materials using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy;

(c) model the behavior and chemistries of these materials using density functional theory (DFT), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and peridynamics techniques;

(d) perform surface functionalization of carbon-based reinforcement materials like carbon fibers or carbon nanotubes to make these materials compatible with a wide range of polymers.

(e) process various polymer blends via extrusion or other appropriate methods for subsequent mechanical testing.

Support tasks are complex and require the application of advanced physical, materials, and mathematical principals.

As determined by Government requirements, activities that the successful candidate shall complete include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct synthesis of various polymers including epoxy-based thermosets, polyimides, and polyacrylates.
  • Conduct surface functionalization of carbon fibers and/or carbon nanotubes to attach various polymers.
  • Scale up the above synthesis and surface functionalization strategies to tens of grams per day types of levels.
  • Conduct thermal characterization of the above synthesized materials using DSC, DMA and TGA.
  • Conduct surface analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to quantify atomic concentrations of surface modified carbon materials and polymers.
  • Use DFT modeling to investigate methods of initiating polymerization reactions.
  • Use peridynamic modeling to predict mechanical properties of various composite systems.
  • Prepare blends of polymers via extrusion processing for subsequent mechanical testing.
  • Prepare presentations and written documents summarizing efforts in Government format for Form 1 approval (process of instruction provided by COR as GFI). Upon TO COR request, Contractor personnel shall present the information to the ARL staff, universities, private corporations, research institutes, national laboratories, or other Government research centers.

Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree with a concentration in macromolecular science and engineering, or polymer science and engineering with five (5) or more years of relevant experience.
  • At least three (3) years of practical experience to include working in a university laboratory as part of a doctoral program.
  • At least two (2) years of practical post-doctoral experience to include working in a government laboratory or industrial laboratory.
  • A co-author on at least four (4) published peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Knowledge of polymer synthesis techniques to include ATRP, radical polymerization and A+B block polymerization.
  • Experience with surface functionalization of carbon-based reinforcements (e.g., carbon fiber or carbon nanotubes).
  • Experience with DFT and/or MD simulations.

  • Competitive market-based salary, commensurate with experience and education
  • Comprehensive benefits package available
