    Bennett AerospaceInc. has an opening for a highly motivated Research Assistant for the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Environmental Processes Branch (EP-P) team in execution of its mission in Vicksburg, MS. The candidate will be a Bennett Aerospace employee performing services for ERDC in Vicksburg, MS.


    Job Description:


    The candidate shall provide all labor and expertise needed to assist with the completion of research experiments evaluating the impacts that military relevant materials have on microorganisms and microbial communities in support of Army basic and applied research

    • Perform a variety of technical duties such as preparing chemical solutions, sterile technique, bacterial, fungal, and algal cultivation, microbial, chemical and physiological analyses, extraction of RNA and/or DNA following laboratory protocols and media/microcosm preparation to support current research projects.
    • Keep exact, detailed records of experimental data as well as tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data using various computer software programs such as Excel etc.
    • Operate and care for a variety of analytical laboratory instrumentation including but not limited to HPLC, GC, IC to support current research projects.
    • Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment by washing glassware, sweeping and mopping the laboratory floor, and discarding laboratory, biohazardous, and chemical waste in an appropriate manner.
    • Demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills and a willingness to work in a highly multidisciplinary environment.
    • Author one to two page status report detailing technical duties, experimental results and problems encountered shall be generated monthly. A brief technical report (<5 pages) summarizing the results of experiments with appendices in spreadsheets providing results obtained from all instruments utilized shall be completed at the end of the project. All results shall be defensible for peer review and shall be incorporated into peer reviewed scientific abstracts and publications.
    • The candidate shall be responsible for costs incurred for medical monitoring (once per year) as follows in connection with the above work:
      • SMA 21 screen and evaluation
      • CBC with Differential screen and evaluation
      • PCBs/Pesticides exposure screen and evaluation
      • Heavy metal screen and evaluation
      • Auditory evaluation
      • Complete ophthalmologic exam
    • The following training is required by the Department of Defense, the Army, and the ERDC for the candidate to be onsite
      • Laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance
      • Handling of Explosives
      • Explosives Safety
      • Handling of Radioactive Materials
      • Radiation Safety
      • Chemical Safety


    Education and Experience:

    • Scientist with Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or microbiology and a combination of five years of experience and education in the areas of genomic, genetic or molecular biology studies.

    Travel Requirements:

    • Nonlocal travel not expected.

    • Must be able to pass a background security screening

    • Must be articulate, adaptable, and able to work with a variety of research professionals in academia, government, and industry.
    • Strong intellectual interest in scientific and engineering disciplines;
    • Exceptionally Strong written and verbal English communication skills;
    • Able to initiate open discussion with internal and external customers to understand and troubleshoot problems; and
    • Excellent computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and e-mail software. Expert in spreadsheet development, manipulation, and management
